Well today we looked at our Office Max that is going out of business. Everything in the store is 50% off right now, including dry erase boards.
Eeekkk! Those things are expensive! I'm not even looking for magnetic ones. They had two sizes left, 4' x 6', and 3' x 4'. Even at 50 % off they were $70.00 and $25.00 + tax.
We came home to measure and decide where we wanted to put the dry erase board before buying one because you can't return anything with the store closing. It turned out we wanted two boards in our dining room, and the spaces were both 4' wide. Then I remembered something I had heard online once. You can use white shower tile board (sometimes called Melamine Tile Board) as a dry erase board. I sent my dear husband to Home Depot to find some. It just happens to come in 4' x 8' sheets, and they will cut it for free. One sheet cost us $13.87. Cut in half for free and voila - our two boards. We decided to use a combination of Liquid nails panel glue and some screws in the corners to fasten the boards to our walls.

now if you want to make it a little prettier, get some moulding, Home depot will cut it too and make a frame for it. Liquid nails will work to "nail" it up. What a great idea! Love it.
I LOVE this idea! Thanks so much! I'm working in my classroom this week, so I'll be sending hubby to Home Depot soon! :)
We have been using this for a year in our home school room, but after awhile you can no longer erase the board. We started looking for alternatives, and tried the White Board paint from Rustolium with terrible results.
I am now looking at three alternatives:
1. Plexi Glass \ Lexan
2. A resurfacing material from Troy Dry Erase ($100.00 for 2 4x5 rolls)http://troydryerase.com/resurface-whiteboards.htm
3. MB3000 White Board Resurfacing from http://www.solutionsmb.com/ $40.00
Good luck
Great post! Much better instructions than mine!! :)
I have had trouble with erasing from day one and found that Magic Erasers do the trick. That may not hold true after more use, though.
Thanks for the link, Tristan!
I was wondering if you had an update on how this was working for you. Do you have trouble erasing???
It's still working great. here is what I've learned:
- wipe down the board daily after use with a wet rag.
- if you don't wipe it off you'll have to use dry erase board cleaner (the spray stuff) but it will still clean up perfectly with some elbow grease.
- don't use permanent marker! Yep, the 1yo did it.
If you trace over the permanent marker with a dry erase marker it all wipes away. Yep, my 1-year-old might have done this, too. LOL
