Making Friends (and Enemies) in History

ldh blog buttonMy new post is up over at Latter-Day Homeschooling, Making Friends (and Enemies) in History. If you read my post yesterday about our workbox plans for the week you know we’re starting something new. Go read my new post to learn what it’s all about!

As always, here is your sneak peek:

“I have been reading What the Scriptures Teach Us about Raising a Child by S. Michael Wilcox lately. This post came from an idea in there that has really been percolating in my mind. In chapter 7, Enlarging the Memory, the author tells how listening to his mother read scripture stories to him from a young age gave him friends like Nephi, Samuel, and David. Then he tells of a time when his daughter went to Russia to teach. She was listening to a very persuasive professor, whose logical arguments were difficult to combat yet made her very uncomfortable. What friends and enemies live in your children’s hearts?

Hi-
I'm a new reader. I love this idea. I'm wondering what you are specifically doing to introduce friends/enemies from the scriptures. What do you include in your workbox?

Hi Marne! That's a great question. For the workbox so far I have planned:
- a children's scripture reader with the stories bookmarked for a person
- a bookmark with the actual scripture verse written on it for my 9yo to look up and read with me
- a paper doll or two to make into the person and act out the story
- a 'what would (the friend/enemy) do?' problem that applies the character trait to something my kids might face.
- a mini-book (folded piece of paper) to draw the person and label if they are a friend/enemy and how we do/don't want to be like them
- I'll also ask the kids when I see them doing something like a person we've learned about if they can think of whose example they're following.
- a quote (or scripture verse) from the person or about the character quality
Hope that helps!
