Week in Review #78–Make A Cell and Eat it Too

I’m keeping this week in review really short.  Yes, we have done homeschool this week, all the usual things (math, spelling, reading, writing, phonics, science, spanish with Speekee, and so on).  We have also had Grandma visiting from California, which is really what the children have been loving the most.

We wound up our first chapter in Exploring Creation with Human Anatomy and Physiology this morning in a fun way.100_4713

We used jello and lots of different candies to represent the organelles in a cell. 100_4716

Once the put the piece in the jello we flipped each cell out of their bowls onto a plate to look at. 100_4717

And to eat.  Some liked it, others, like Oliver, were not impressed with the lemon jello.  100_4719

We had index cards with each organelle written on one side.  On the back was the job of that organelle and the piece of candy that was representing it.  100_4721

Next week we move on to the skeletal system.

We can't wait to do Apologia Anatomy! The activities seem like so much fun! (We're doing Zoo III now and Astronomy is next.)

Looks like some fun science stuff going on there. We are really enjoying the Studying Creation Through Astronomy book this year.

The Anatomy activities look like fun! We'll be starting the Flying Creatures book soon and then slowly completing the rest of them, I think.

yummy! We did that last year except it was a cell in a ziploc bag. The kids still remember it! Yay for Grandma visiting, too. :-)

Feel free to use the review of the reviews idea!

Fun! My kids enjoyed doing that one, too. My Joseph even enjoyed eating the boiled egg inside the lemon jello.

While those sorts of hands-on activities take a long time and are kind of messy sometimes, I can honestly say I see the fruit of that labor now that my first child is taking a high school science course. Every time my daughter encounters something in Biology that she has had previous experience with, it is so much easier for her. Those hands-on activities are often the ones she remembers.
