The homeschool week is over and I’ll be honest, half of it was a bust. Several of the children passed around a cold consisting of a fever, stuffy nose, and general crabbiness. When it hit Oliver (age 1) and Caleb (age 2 months) things really took a downward spiral. Both little boys wanted in momma’s arms pretty much nonstop. One day daddy was home too and so they were willing to split their time between us. Homeschool was done in bits and spurts. The local public schools took a few days off for weather, while we took some half days – hehe. Here’s what got done:
Gospel – Memorization went pretty well with two new additions this week, as did singing.
Math – Makayla is struggling with memorizing skip count by 8’s so we’re going to break out the song for it this weekend. She was able to complete the test and ace it this week, but I know she needs some more practice before we move on. Joseph and Emma did some time online at Mathletics and enjoyed it while practicing math concepts at the same time.
All About Spelling – Week one of level 3 for Makayla had lots of review and she did just fine.
Phonics – Joseph and Emma read to me and both still struggle with telling lowercase b and d apart in words sometimes. I’m going to have to make a game that practices telling them apart. Hopefully I’ll get to it this weekend.
Copywork – going great! I like having them copy some of their memorization work, it’s helping them learn it well. We’re using the StartWrite software to make our copywork pages and I’ll try to post more about that soon.
Writing – Makayla wrote her talk for Church all by herself. We had some great discussions while she was writing.
Anatomy – we began our study of the muscular system. So far, so good. The children have been big on exercising and trying to use those muscles, which sometimes makes for a really loud group of children when I’m trying to read aloud.
Reading Aloud – We’ve read more in Swiss Family Robinson this week, started School Days with the Millers, and I’m trying to get time to pull together a book list as Book Club starts back up next week.
Okay, so when I type it all out like that I guess we got more done than I thought in between holding little ones. I’m linking this post to the Weekly Wrap-Up. How was your week – did you get done more or less that you had hoped?

We had sick ones too ... they still are. We are going to do make-up work today. Yes, on Saturday. While they are/were sick, I did the read aloud stuff and slowly work back into the things that need real brain power on their part.
Sorry to hear about illnesses- must be winter! But it does look like you've accomplished quite a bit even though.
What song would that be for memorizing the 8's?? My dd (14) still struggles with this one.
And btw, I've given you an award ;)

Have a great weekend, Tristan!
This week has been mainly sick days here too...tuesday i was recovering from a bug, thursday and friday my son didn't move from the couch at all (and he's still there today) with tonsilitis and now my daughter and i are sick too as well...hope next week is a healthy one for you all!
What a sweet little "nest" of children you have! Our friends are having their 6th child soon. It is amazing and that you find time to homeschool too! Wow. I just started reading "The Mouse and the Motorcycle" to my 2-1/2 year old. It's awesome that he enjoys doing a chapter a night with me. I loved when my mom read to us aloud.
So sorry to hear you've had so much sickness at your house, hope everyone's feeling better! I've nominated you for the Stylish Blogger Award http://broadhorizonsschool.blogspot.com/2011/02/stylish-blogs.html
Hannah gets d and b mixed up too. Her phonics book puts a dot in the middle of the b to help tell them apart and after a while it tapers off.
We actually got some school work done today since I forgot it was Saturday. ;) Lots of addition and handwriting so all is well. :)
Tristan, if you cook up a game to help kids differentiate "b" and "d" would you please share? My two beginning readers struggle with that too. The above comment about a dot in the "b" is interesting. Thanks!
Hugs to you on the sickies. My youngest is 2 and was not hit with our last bout but having two young ones that just want to be held is rough.
I think I'm not the first to ask, but will you please share your game. I tell my son that b has a big belly and d is dragging behind but other than that the reversal of those two stump me. Looking forward to hearing what you create. :)
You've been picked for the Stylish Blogger Award. You deserve it!
