After my last post lamenting the books that have invaded every place in our home I received lots of good advice in the comments. Thank You! It is so encouraging to know I’m not the only one on this journey to simplify.
I decided to spend time working on one shelf that I knew held books I no longer needed in print because they were free to download to my Kindle. Once I got rolling it was pretty fun. While we still have plenty of books, I was able to pass all of these to my local Goodwill store:
Want to know what was even better? Some of those crates were filled willingly by my children from their very own bookshelves in their bedrooms. I was so proud of them!
What will be the next thing to go?

Glad to see your post, I just took a quick break from doing exactly this!
I have cleaned out 2 bookshelves of books and I am about to start our curriculum and workbook shelves, whew.
Enjoy your simplification!
Oh that is great, I looked at the photo and thought, boy I would have a hard time getting rid of books. But I think I will try.
OH my! That's quite the stack! We're on a journey to simplify (my theme for every time my husband is gone... might have something to do with the ridiculous amount of free time and/or the desire to stop taking care of "stuff"). It's fun that others are kicking out stuff too and finding what matters to them and their families... thanks for posting about your decluttering efforts. It's interesting how even "great items" can be clutter, you know? My kids books will be the hardest for me to go through, definitely starting with the easy choices in the adult/our old college books section :-). Can't wait to see more of your efforts!!
I find my biggest de clutter areas are the utensil and tupperware drawers. Cracked lids, 2 pairs of tongs, containers with missing lids and multiple unused serving spoons are some the recent things I decided to pare down on!
Hey, we just got a kindle. I'm looking forward to getting some of the free books and clearing out some of our shelves!! Which ones would you recommend, both the free and just in general? I've noticed many of the books cost more than print :(
MomLaur83 - I'll do a post about where I find free Kindle books, but one place is on Amazon's 100 Bestsellers page in the Kindle Ebooks - it shows both 100 to buy and 100 free. I go through the free ones every week and grab the ones I think will be good. Also, if you just go look at all the Kindle ebooks and have it sort by price Low to High all the Free ones are first. Many many classics are free.
Okay, I'll work on a post about it this week....
