Happy NOT Back to School Day 2011

Happy NOT Back to School Day!

Today is the first day of the local public school’s year.  Today is the day my family takes to celebrate our family’s freedom as homeschoolers to direct the learning and even the schedule going on in our homes.  We do not have the government telling us when we can be a family or when and how we must learn.  The government does not decide for my family!  The government may not take my children for 7 hours every day Monday through Friday from August to June and make our family work around their schedule.  God places parents at the head of a family to teach, train, and even direct the schedule of their days.  Today we celebrate our God-given right to be the authority in our children’s lives.

My family has celebrated this day in different ways, but one thing that is constant is making homemade cinnamon rolls.  Typically these are made in the wee hours of the morning so they are ready for breakfast, but this year things have been a little bit different because Tuesday night I tore some anterior ligament in my ankle.  I’m supposed to be staying off my foot and in a splint for 6 weeks, according to the doctor, to which I asked “Then what do I do with my 6 children for those 6 weeks?”  I was a bit grumpy at the fact that being pregnant I can’t really take any painkillers.  He didn’t have any answers for me.

Well, we weren’t willing to skip our cinnamon rolls today, so instead of Mommy making them for breakfast, the children made them under Makayla’s guidance - for lunch!  100_6780I have to say I’m very grateful for the training we’ve invested in my children – the house is virtually running itself, with very little that they can’t do.  100_6779Everyone took turns adding ingredients.100_6781They worked together pretty well. 100_6783Except Caleb, poor guy, who just isn’t quite big enough to help. 100_6787Makayla really enjoyed being the one in charge of the cooking. 100_6791No surprise there.  Here are the finished cinnamon rolls right before icing and eating them.  100_6793Once the icing goes on the camera gets forgotten, sorry!

We’ve played and enjoyed our day, including doing a new puzzle together:100_6774My kids really love these GeoPuzzles!  We have two of them and hope to get the rest in time.

Now everyone is getting ready to play outside – daddy’s home and so I’m going to leave the post here.  After outside we’re going to settle in for a family movie with popcorn.  Yum!

Who decided what your family would do today – did you?  Or does the government decide for you?

We haven't started school yet, but I'm so thankful that we'll be the ones deciding what our kids are exposed to each day!

Our first day here in Oregon is either the 6th or 12th of September! We will be going to the park - for a First Day of No School Day! Cinnamon rolls sound wonderful!

Hope your foot heals! Thanks for sharing the post- it brought a smile to my face and reminds me why we homeschool our children.

The schools here go back in session on Sept. 7th, so we plan on having a celebration of our freedom then! Last year, we went to the ocean for our "Not Back-2-School" day and we had a blast! :)
