My husband and I went looking for a character curriculum that would give us tools to encourage our family to develop positive character qualities. We wanted something fun, child-friendly, and easy to implement. We found We Choose Virtues and sought out the opportunity to review some of their products. We received two products:
How We’ve Used We Choose Virtues
It’s been simple! We introduce our children to the new virtue by holding up the teacher card and looking over the front first. We read aloud the catchphrase telling us positive ways we demonstrate that virtue. For “I am Gentle” the catchphrase is “I speak quietly and touch softly.” We read the antonym as well “I am NOT…rough, harsh, or loud, and I don’t destroy things or hurt people.” We invite the children to look closely at the child pictured on the card and ask them to tell us what they see. One of the things my little ones saw right away on the card for gentle was that the little girl has an animal peeking out of her pocket. Each virtue child has a special object with them. That is when we read the child’s story from the back of the teacher card to learn how they relate to the virtue and why they have their special item. Gentle Jill works in a pet store and has learned that her friend the gerbil will only stay in her pocket when she’s quiet and gentle. We talk about why that is, and when we might need to be gentle in our everyday lives.
On subsequent days we use the teachable moments and other ideas from the back of the Teacher Virtue Cards after reviewing the catchphrase and antonym. We also use the poster on a daily basis as we ‘catch’ the children doing a virtue, or as we correct a child who is not remembering a virtue. In both instances they are brought to the poster. If we have caught them being good we praise them for being “gentle like Jill” and specifically telling them what we noticed them doing. If correcting them we ask what virtue they think they were forgetting to use. We point it out and have them repeat the catchphrase and antonym and talk briefly about what part they were having trouble with.
Final Thoughts
We Choose Virtues has give us an easy way to be consistent in our efforts to build positive character traits. It has also helped us define the negative aspects to our children and inspire them to work for the positive. We are seeing progress with our entire family as we are consistent. We’ve enjoyed We Choose Virtues so much that I’m an affiliate. That means I can share the newest coupon codes with you, so here they are:- “family” for $3.00 off the Kids Virtue Poster, no expiration date set
- “Virtue15” for 15% off your entire shopping cart, no expiration date set
- “ourhouse” for $15.00 off the new Family Kit, November only.

The animal next to the logo....isn't an animal at all....it's a butterfly.

Our family needs to work on lots of virtures (ahem) but I think I'm most excited about "content." I have some little complainers and they need to work on being happy with what they have.
Looks like a neat program.

What a great thing you've found here! I, too, love that it gives what's good about the virtue and then what the virtue isn't. What family couldn't benefit from something like this. Love it!
I've been eyeing these. I would love to add them to our home.
What a pretty butterfly!

What virtue does the famiy need to work on, ummmm, all of them, lol! I would probably say being gentle. Harsh attitudes fly around this house (along with hands and feet)more often than they should.

I would love to win this! I have been looking into We Choose Virtues for awhile. If I don't win I think I will definitely need to purchase something.
Would you say the best thing to purchase would be the cards? Do you think the poster is important too?

We could use a lot of virtue help around here. I'm a bio and adoptive Mom of 4, along with a foster Mom to 4 more. Some of these kids have been raised pretty badly and need constant reminders of how to behave and respect. Having the poster and cards as reminders would be wonderful!
The logo is a butterfly :o)

Self-control seems to always be an issue we need to work on.

There is a cute little butterfly on the top of the page near the logo.
I think my kiddos (7, 5, 3) struggle equally with being gentle and kind. They are not purposefully mean (most of the time) but have a hard time remembering that teasing is not fun to those being teased and if it's not fun for everyone it's not a considerate and kind activity.
I receive your emails and follow you on GFC too. I LOVE YOUR EMAILS. You are a very important part of my day, even if I don't comment or email as much. :)
I would love to win this. I've been looking for a better and positive way to encourage my 5 year old.

I would love to have these virtues (cards) in my home. It's almost more of a need than a want. What a great learning tool!

some days it feels like we need to work on all of them:) But I think I a Gentle, we really need to work on speaking quietly with a couple of our boys.
I follow you via e-mail.
I was just thinking about this quote "If we treat people as they ought to be we help them become what they are capable of becoming." This curriculum reminded me of the quote and I would love to win it! My email is tlcschroeder@gmail.com
The butterfly is a neat illustration of what we're hoping happens with our children!
With a new baby in the house a twin boy two year olds the virtue I would like to work on is "gentleness". :)
The animal is a butterfly.
The virtue we need to work on is being dilligent. Too much whining going on right now - and the kids could work on it too! :) lol
