Remembering the Titanic

We’re taking advantage of the flexibility of homeschooling to learn about the Titanic this week as the 100th anniversary of its sinking is remembered on Saturday.  There are so many resources available but I have learned that less is more.  We’re spending the week using a trio of library books and a documentary:tonight on the titanicTonight on the Titanic – This Magic Tree House book is a fun way to put your family into the infamous night.  It’s not a great literary work by any means, but child-friendly.eyewitness titanicEyewitness Titanic – This nonfiction book provided us with an inside look at the ship, the people, news coverage, survivors, finding the wreckage, a timeline, and more.  As we read the story and my children ask questions or wonder what something looked like this is the book we check for answers.icebergsWonders of the World: Icebergs – The photography in this small volume is priceless.  Seeing as my children have never seen an iceberg in real life, this gives us a peek.  Their favorite picture is on page 20: iceberg

The fourth component of our Titanic study will be watching some of the documentary Titanica on Netflix.  titanicaI don’t know yet how interested my children will be in this documentary but we’ll try it.

Are you doing any studies on the Titanic this week?

What a fun activity! I always loved history; so I think I will read some more on this subject.

I didn't realize we were hitting the anniversary this week. Thanks for the heads up. I think I will go get a couple of books.
