Goodbye 2012, Hello 2013!

There are so many neat posts going up reviewing the year 2012 or the top posts for 2012.  I am going to share a few things about 2012 along with some randomness.  mother with children agnes nichollOur family’s year began with the birth of our 7th child, Mason, in January.  He came to earth with Spina Bifida and other medical challenges which I blog about here.  In 2012 Mason had 1 spinal surgery and 6 brain surgeries.  As we have gotten to know his personality we have met a sweet, cheerful spirit who reminds me every day the truth of this scripture:

“I can do all things through Christ, which strengtheneth me.”

The other six children have grown, learned many things academically, and taken on new responsibilities.  They are best friends most of the time, regular pesky siblings the rest of the time.

Homeschooling has been wonderful in 2012.  I honestly can’t imagine life any other way – homeschooling is flexible enough for Mason’s medical needs and therapies while giving my other children time to dive into their passions.  The whole family has TIME together every day.  We eat together, learn together, play together, and are family centered.  It is a blessing!

We learned in November that God is sending baby #8 to our family next summer.  What a blessing!  I did have to admit to my husband the other day that we’re officially a large family.  For some reason 5 and 6 children did not seem especially ‘large family’.  Mason was number 7 and we’ve been too busy with his health needs for me to realize that 7 children is a large family.  Now that we are anticipating baby number eight it has really hit that I have a large family.  We have to do things differently, from bedrooms to grocery shopping to cooking.  I’m finding all sorts of inspiration for that lately and hope to share some of it in the future.

So that’s my 2012 recap.  On to some miscellany!

100_1212First up is this beautiful drink.  Mmm, I’ve been drinking green smoothies and they’re just so yummy.  The kids like them - even when they are actually green.  This was today’s batch.  The ingredients:

  • water
  • handfuls of spinach
  • frozen pineapple
  • frozen strawberries
  • bananas

100_1221These are part of my Christmas present this year.  My old tennis shoes are falling apart and so I knew I needed something new for all the walking I’ll be doing for my children in 2013.  For the first time I bought shoes online.  Amazon had free returns on shoes so if I needed a new size it would have been no big deal.  Mine are Skechers Women's Tone Ups Run in Charcoal and Hot Pink.

12.31Mason is playing while sitting up more often.  He still balances with one hand.  If he forgets himself and tries to play with toys in both hands he wobbles.  If he is quick enough he can catch himself, if not he falls over.  Progress.  Slow and steady, right?  He’s already doing more than the doctors expected he would at this age.

minds_under_constructionTomorrow we start back up with our homeschool year.  I’m so excited!  Taking a break is fun and the children have kept themselves busy playing, building with Legos, and crafting.  Everyone is ready to get back to work though.  We’ve got some fun science plans and we’re heading back to the Creation for history with Mystery of History Vol. 1: Creation thru the Resurrection.  Joseph and Emma are also attempting their first chapter books beginning tomorrow.  It should be interesting!  The younger boys chose Armadillo Rodeo as their next unit study – Texas here we come.  Even better – Daddy is off tomorrow and he makes school an adventure.  You never know what will happen with Daddy in on the teaching!

Happy New Year!
