Along with the walking I’m doing for my children in 2013 I have started a new page on the blog. You probably didn’t even notice. The new tab above is “Books Read 2013”. This goes with one of my goals for the new year. I always enjoy reading others posts about books they’ve read each year and it makes me wonder how many good books I’ve read during a year. 2013 is my year to keep track of my reading!
I’m keeping it simple, putting everything on that page. When I see a book I want to read it goes on the page under “Books I Plan to Read”. It stays there until I finally start reading the book, which could be days, weeks, or months.
Once I start reading a book it moves down the page under “Books I am Currently Reading”. I usually have a stack of books going because I never know just what I will be in the mood to read.
Finished books move the rest of the way down the page under “Books I Finished Reading in 2013”. I already have one title there. I started it a few days ago and finished it up today. You’ll have to click the tab above to see what book it was!
Here is my question for you:
What are some ‘must-read’ titles you would suggest I read?
Some background to guide your suggestions may help. I’m a huge fan of historical fiction, don’t mind Amish fiction, non-fiction is good, inspirational works, classics, and even light mysteries. I’ve read the occasional sci-fi and fantasy.
What I don’t like to read: Bedroom scenes, scary mysteries, horror, or a romance book I couldn’t hand to my 11 year old daughter to read.
What I gave up reading when I realized I wouldn’t let my children read them: the Twilight Saga(so NOT a good example of teen/parent relationships OR romance), the Hunger Games (violence ad nauseum), and anything similar.
So there you have it, comment with your book suggestions and they just may make my list to read this year.

Have you ever read any of the books by Francine Rivers. She writes a lot of good stuff. Redeeming Love is my favorites.

I have started reading Uncle Tom's Cabin for the second time. I highly recommend that one! I also love North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell (a contemporary of Jane Austen)...and my favorite light (LDS) romance is by Sharon Downing Jarvis titled The Healing Place.
On a side note, I completely agree with your opinion on the Twilight Saga. I read the first book because so many of my friends were gushing over it. I couldn't *stand* the teenage angst. :)
My go-to suggestion when people ask this question is "Ahab's Wife" by Sena Jeter Naslund. It's sort of a spin-off of "Moby Dick" but is from his wife's perspective.
Tristan,
Actually, I did notice your new tab and already read through the books on your lists. I promised myself (not a resolution) that I would read more ME books this year along w/the many books I already read w/my children. It has been so long, that I haven't an idea right now of books to suggest, but have rather been reading through the lists of others. I think I am also going to consider some of The Classics since my children will be reading through many of those soon.
I have been receiving your daily updates for a while now, and I like your idea of reviewing books you love. I am an Aussie transplant who writes for kids, and I have two teen adventures both you and your daughter could read together.
**Taconi and Claude- Double Trouble:
a coming of age story set in the Aussie outback of 1950. Young Taconi faces a man ceremony, big decisions, and Dreamtime spirits with their own plans for him. Claude, a chatty cockatoo, offers wise one liners.
** The Revenge of Thelma Hill, a ghost mystery set in Oregon. When Frannie and her twin brother moved to Oregon, she had no thought of ghosts, revenge, or hunting a killer. She worried about finding new friends and their sibling rivalry.
NOTE: When the ghost began to feel very familiar, I realized I had based her on my dear mom. So what the heck, I also named her after Mom. I just knew Mom would be tickled to be featured in one of my books.

Harry Potter is my all time favorite series ever! I suggest them, if you haven't tried them yet. Also, I love The Sea of Trolls series by Nancy Farmer. It's about the Vikings!
Last year I read 1 book a week for the year (52 books). I usually found an author I like and read a bunch of books until I was ready to move on. I really enjoyed Sarah M. Eden books (I even read some of them twice) and Lawana Blackwell books. I read one book by Jennifer Chiaverini that I enjoyed, but I'm not sure if all of her books are similar so the verdict is still out (I am going to the library tomorrow so I'll know in a couple of weeks if she is an author I enjoy).
North & South and Wives & Daughters are my all time favorite books and the bbc productions are just as fabulous. I also love Amish books, the Sisters of the Quilt by Cindy Woodsmall is a great trilogy. For more contemporary that you can read with kids- Michael Vey and Toby Gold are great reads. Another series I enjoy that's great for teens is the Chuck Black Kingdom & Knights of Arrethtrae series. Happy reading!
Ever read any books by
Bodie Thoene and Brock Thoene? They are Christian writer. They write historical fiction. I read the Zion Covenant Series about WWII. I loved it. I have read one or two of their other books as well. I really enjoy their writing.
